International conference turns the spotlight on welfare and piglet production
On 21-22 September, the Danish Agriculture & Food Council Pig Research Centre and SEGES Innovation will gather experts in piglet health and nutrition from across the world. The event will take place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Copenhagen.
Health and welfare are key factors for piglets born in today’s pig production. Sharing innovation and new trends with colleagues across the world is therefore crucial if piglets are to be provided with optimal conditions in the farrowing unit.
"We know that knowledge is essential for piglet survival. This not only applies to the litters from highly productive sows, but it’s also a success criterion for those working with piglets,” says Christian Fink Hansen, Sector Director, Danish Agriculture & Food Council Pig Research Centre.
Esteemed scientists
The most prominent scientists in the field have been invited to present their latest findings at the two-day conference. They include Dr. Vivi Aarestrup Moustsen, Chief Scientist at SEGES Innovation, Thomas Sønderby Bruun, Senior Specialist at SEGES Innovation and Dr. Yolande Seddon, Assistant Professor at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada.
"We’ve put a substantial amount of work into choosing scientists who can present exciting results in their respective fields and provide insights into how we can improve production in the farrowing unit in terms of welfare and productivity,” says Karl Pedersen, Chief Scientist at SEGES Innovation and member of the Scientific Committee.
Six topics on the table
The conference will address the following areas of piglet production:
- Feeding strategies for sows prior to farrowing
- Feeding sows for higher milk production
- Piglet immunity
- Feeding piglets prior to weaning
- Management of sows with large udders
- Design of the farrowing pen
