Updated figures provide an overview of developments in the Danish pig sector, including production, exports, prices and productivity. In 2025, total production reached 31.8 million pigs, up from 30.9 million the previous year, while the number of pig farms fell from 1,949 to 1,706.

Higher pig production and more pigs slaughtered in Denmark

Following two years of lower activity, both pig production and slaughtering numbers increased in Denmark in 2025. Total production rose to 31.8 million pigs, while the number of pigs slaughtered increased from 14.3 million to 15.0 million pigs. At the same time, the total pig population grew from 11.61 million to 12.02 million.

Danish pig farms are becoming fewer, larger and more specialised

The long-term trend towards fewer and larger pig farms continued in 2025. The number of pig farms fell by around 12%, from 1,949 to 1,706. By comparison, Denmark had more than 5,000 pig farms in 2010. The figures also reflect the increasing specialisation of Danish pig production.

Danish pig meat exports increased, with Poland and Germany as key markets

The latest statistics also show an increase in exports. Danish pig meat exports rose from 1.79 million tonnes to 1.88 million tonnes. Measured by the combined volume of live pigs and pig meat, Poland was Denmark’s largest market, receiving around 463,000 tonnes, followed by Germany at approximately 413,000 tonnes.

Productivity continues to improve in Danish pig production

Productivity in Danish pig production continued to improve in 2025. The number of pigs produced per sow per year increased from 35.6 to 36.9, while feed consumption among finisher pigs fell from 2.61 to 2.56 feed units per kg of weight gain. Both figures reflect continued improvements in production efficiency.
