Few events embody the spirit of openness and shared learning as does the Herning Pig Congress, which takes place between 20-21 October. Professionals from all aspects of the pig industry come together with the sole purpose of improving the foundation for the future of the Danish pig industry. Topics include animal welfare, export markets, feed prices, production methods and changing market requirements.
Upward trend
The congress takes place against a backdrop of growth in Danish pig production. In 2025, Denmark produced 31.8 million pigs against 30.9 million in 2024. Slaughtering numbers are also showing an increase – 8% in Q2 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. Export figures also reflect a similar trend. Danish pig meat exports to third countries increased by 10% between January and June 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. The total export volume to third countries was 330,000 tonnes, corresponding to a 16% share in those markets. This is particularly noteworthy given that, overall, EU exports to third countries declined slightly over the same period. The Danish figures thus underscore a stable export position and sustained global demand for Danish pork.
Collaborate effort
Alongside these commercial developments, the groundwork is being laid for the industry’s long-term future with the establishment of a “four-party” collaboration to examine the future of Danish pig production. Although termed a four-party grouping, the collaboration comprises seven participants representing four broad interests: the government, the agricultural sector, employers and employees and green/animal welfare organisations. Its remit is to improve animal welfare and sustainability, create more jobs while maintaining overall competitiveness. Discussions are set to begin in 2027.
Last year, no fewer than 2,164 participants attended the two-day congress, which is sure testimony to the commitment and resolve of everyone involved in the Danish pig industry – an industry that maintains robust standards in all areas of production as well as high levels of efficiency.
