Animal welfare is a significant element in pig production, both for the good of the animals and in order to ultimately provide a better meat quality. In Denmark, we have a principle of handling pigs in groups when they are transported, arrive at the abattoir and are stunned. This ensures that the greatest possible allowance is made for the natural behaviour of the pigs.
The principle of handling slaughter pigs in groups, from delivery to slaughter, contributes to ensuring a gentle treatment before slaughtering.
CO2-stunning in groups is another significant contribution to good animal welfare. It is not necessary to fixate the pigs as under stunning with electricity and their natural behaviour is taken into consideration.
