Timeline: Additional Danish welfare requirements for more than 20 years

Animal welfare will also be high on the agenda in 2020. It is an issue that concerns consumers, politicians and, of course, the industry itself. In Europe, initiatives are continually being launched – and solutions found – to create even higher welfare standards. In Denmark, too, the long-term focus has been on improving animal welfare. This has been supported by many initiatives from politicians and the Danish pig industry in general. Check out the timeline for an overview of the initiatives that exceed EU requirements.

The strategy for Danish pig production is to be at the forefront in terms of further improvements to animal welfare. Over the past twenty years, new initiatives have been launched – for the benefit of pig well-being but also to ensure that Danish pig producers keep pace with the ever-increasing focus on animal welfare.

The table below shows the various initiatives that the Danish pig industry has launched over the past 20 years or more.

In addition to those shown in the diagram, many other initiatives have been launched in Denmark to improve animal welfare in housing units.

Also read about the work that has gone into the government-backed animal welfare label that has appeared on pork products since 2017 and on poultry products since 2018. From 2020, beef, veal and dairy products will also carry the same label.
