The green transition of Danish agriculture gets underway

Following the conclusion of the Green Tripartite agreement in autumn 2024, the start-up phase has got underway.

Last year, representatives of the Danish government and representatives of the agricultural and food industry concluded a future-oriented agreement on a green Denmark. This was later underpinned by a broad majority in the Danish Parliament through a political framework agreement. The agreement includes a comprehensive nitrogen initiative and a CO2e-tax on livestock emissions.

The agreement’s first deadlines are now approaching, and the work has begun. On February 1, the members of 23 local green tripartite groups were appointed by the municipalities, the Danish Agriculture & Food Council, the Danish Society for Nature Conservation and the Danish Nature Agency.

The local tripartite groups consist of 1-2 representatives appointed by the Danish Agriculture & Food Council, 1-2 representatives from each of the municipalities in the catchment area, 1-2 from local nature organisations and 1 person from the Danish Nature Agency.

They have been tasked with drawing up conversion plans for land reallocation and finding the best solutions in each individual watershed to support a robust agricultural sector as well as improve the water environment, create more nature and reduce climate emissions.

Danish pig production has already embarked on efforts to create a greener Denmark. In order to reduce greenhouse gases, the industry’s main aim is the efficient storage and use of slurry whereby it is removed from housing units as quickly as possible and used in biogas plants.
