Conference spotlights carbon-reduced pig meat for the future

20-21 Nov 2024, Danish Agriculture & Food Council and SEGES Innovation host experts in Copenhagen to discuss sustainable pig feeding practices and technologies

"Pig production is facing an important challenge - to reduce pig production’s carbon footprint,” says Christian Fink Hansen, Director of the Danish Agriculture & Food Council’s Pig Sector.

"The Pig Research Summit will present the latest research with an opportunity to network with experts and to take a deep dive into innovative initiatives in pig feed and pig production,” says Dejan Miladinovic, keynote speaker at the event, and Head of Centre for Feed Technology at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences.

The programme comprises 28 presentations, including input from Jason Clay (WWF, Markets), Laura Nobel (Global Feed LCA Institute), Asbjørn Børsting, (The European Feed Manufacturers’ Federation), Søren Vogt (Food Folk, McDonald's), and Dejan Miladinovic (Norwegian University of Life Sciences).

"We have carefully selected scientists and experts who can present exciting results and offer insight into how we can reduce the carbon footprint of pig feed in the future,” says Finn Udesen, Senior Specialist at SEGES Innovation and member of the research committee.

Jason Clay, Senior Vice President, Markets, WWF, will speak on 'The carbon footprint of meat'. He will focus on key issues impacting the livestock and feed industry, the implications and areas with the greatest growth potential. He will also examine the challenges faced by international food production as climate change increases and how livestock production can contribute to solutions.

"There are no easy answers. The key is to determine how we find solutions and where and how producers and the industry in general can scale those solutions faster,” says Jason Clay.

In addition to professional insight, the conference will provide a unique networking platform that brings together scientists, companies and decision-makers. The purpose is to promote open dialogue and create meaningful partnerships that can combine scientifically-based innovation with practical reality.

This year’s conference will offer participants insight into four main topics:

  1. How can we produce sustainable feed for pig production of the future?
  2. Improved utilisation of nutrients in pig feed
  3. What are the sustainable protein sources for pig feed of the future?
  4. Inventory of methods and documentation
