Focus on climate protection
This October, we are starting a new series. We will be reporting regularly on the various measures the industry is taking to achieve its climate objectives
The Danish food and agriculture industry has set itself ambitious objectives. The industry aims to be completely climate-neutral in production by 2050. And the pork sector is also on board. The Danish Agriculture and Food Industry Association has defined a vision for 2050 in conjunction with the country’s pork producers and abattoir companies. It is as follows: “Danish pork is a quality foodstuff in Denmark and around the world. It creates a foundation for wealth and attractive jobs throughout the whole country.” The vision focuses on sustainability, animal welfare and management. The pork industry defined a series of targets as part of its Vision 2050. CO2 emissions from primary production are to be reduced by 50 percent by 2030 and 60 percent of pig slurry produced is to be used in biogas plants for energy extraction. With respect to animal welfare, the industry has set itself the objective of ensuring mandatory free range conditions are a reality for pigs in all stall sections by 2050. Docking of tails will also be prohibited, so all pigs will have a curly tail. And finally, all animals will have the highest health status and survival rate based on a global comparison.
The pork industry is pushing forward with innovative technologies in order to achieve the objectives set. Next month, we are starting a new series in our specialist pork newsletter in which we will be reporting on a range of sustainability projects and industry initiatives.
