'Sofari'
At this year’s Sofari (so=Danish for sow), some 6,000 Danes turned up for an educational and enjoyable day at 11 organic pig farms.
Every year, Danish farmers invite interested members of the public to experience daily life on an organic pig farm. This year, Sofari was held at 11 farms across Denmark.
Several of the organic farms that took part in this year’s event are experimenting with forest farming, which means that pigs live in a forest-like environment with trees and water holes. The trees provide shade and thus protect the sensitive skin of the pig from the harshness of the sun. Moreover, the water holes provide the perfect 'playground' for piglets. This year, the event benefited from sunny weather, which made the day even more idyllic.
Sofari has many benefits. First, it is important for consumers to understand where food comes from, not least organic products. This is because organic products carry a premium price due to their stronger focus on animal welfare and environmentally sound production as well as the reduced intake of pesticides and sprays. By attending a Sofari event, consumers gain an insight into how organic pigs are bred and the work that is involved. Farmers are on hand throughout the day to answer questions and explain organic production in more detail. As committed pig experts, farmers are keen to answer any questions that consumers may put to them.
Sofari offers a unique and ideal day excursion for families with children of all ages: it’s a day of educational and fun activities in the fresh spring air.
