Danish agriculture’s digital climate tool
ESGreen Tool. This is the name of the tool designed to calculate the carbon footprint of farms in Denmark and will support farmers’ future climate choices.
Developments in the climate tool - An important step in the green transition
As previously described, SEGES Innovation Centre, in collaboration with Organic Denmark, has developed a digital climate tool whose purpose is to calculate the climate impact of farmers’ overall agricultural production in Denmark. Later in 2022, the tool will also be able to calculate the climate impact at product level.

ESGreen Tool (an acronym for Environmental, Social & Governance) is free for every farmer to use in 2022 in return for participating in a climate day or for completing an online course.

The calculations in the climate tool are based on the individual farm’s own data which is transferred automatically. By using the tool, the farmer is able to calculate his/her farm’s footprint and how possible changes in feed, fertiliser management, field management, new technologies or investments can impact the carbon imprint positively or negatively.
The area is constantly developing, and potential new calculation methods, knowledge and norms are continually being integrated into the climate tool. The tool is sponsored by the Danish Forenet Kredit and Nykredit and has been developed by SEGES Innovation.
The digital ESGreen Tool:
- Calculates the current climate impact of a farm as the number of CO2 equivalents for the entire farm – including the distribution of methane, CO2 and nitrous oxide.
- Provides for a rapid overview of the CO2 reducing measures that have the greatest effect.
In the long-term, the tool will also be able to calculate the current climate impact of the farm per production unit.
The ESGreen climate tool is an important step in the green transition and in Denmark’s climate vision whose purpose is to ensure a carbon-neutral food industry by 2050.
