Danish pigs in demand

Danish exports of live pigs and pig meat products continued to rise in 2018. The UK alone imported 39,923 tonnes of bacon, which represents a rise in Danish bacon exports to the UK of 28%.

Total exports of live pigs from Denmark saw a year on year increase. In the first ten months of 2018, over 12 billion pigs were exported from the country, an increase of 3.5% compared to the previous year.

Exports of fresh and frozen pig meat also increased. In the first ten months of 2018, 1,214,000 tonnes of pig meat and live pigs were exported to other EU countries, which is an increase of 6.3% compared to the same period in 2017. Primals were particularly sought after in the European market, with demand growing by 6% from 2017 to 2018 (618,366 tonnes).

Danish bacon remains very popular. The largest market is the UK, which imported 39,923 tonnes in 2018 corresponding to 28% growth on the year. The entire export volume of Danish bacon to EU countries amounted to around 42,000 tonnes from January to October 2018.
