Christmas winners (and losers)

The real winners in the battle for consumers spend on groceries over Christmas were the discounters, who continued to gain share from the larger supermarkets.

Of the major supermarkets, both Tesco and Sainsbury held their own over the Christmas period, while rivals Asda, Morrisons and the Co-op lost ground.

Waitrose continued to outperform the market, but Aldi, Lidl and Iceland all recorded significant share improvements, with Aldi securing a 30.5% growth in turnover against an overall market growth of 3.8%.
